Football Assoc. of Malaysia Selection vs PSV Eindhoven 1971

     In 1971, PSV Eindhoven, a football club from Holland made a tour to Southeast Asia for the football tournaments. Its include Malaysia, Singapore and Indonesia. On 8 June 1971, PSV Eindhoven came to Malaysia for a  football tournament against Football Assoc. of Malaysia (FAM) Selection team. The match between PSV Eindhoven vs FAM Selection was held on 9 June 1971 at Merdeka Stadium. 

     FAM Selection coached by Jalil Che Din and consist of Rahim Abdullah, M.Chandran, V. Krishnasamy, Soh Chin Aun, Chow Kwai Lam, Wong Choon Wah, Radagopal, Harun Yusoff, Inrahim Mydin, Zulkifli Norbit, Shaharuddin Abdullah, Hanafiah Mohsein, Ali Bakar, Wong Kam Fook and Awang Essa. PSV Eindhoven team was coached by Kurt Linder and consist of Jan Van Beveren, Johan De Vrindt, Wim Van Den Dungen, Willy Heyink, Guus Hiddink, Peter Kemper, Adrie Van Kraay, Willy Van Der Kuijlen, Harrie Lubse, Eef Mulders, Lazar Radović, Bent Schmidt Hansen, Jac Van Stippent, Pleun Strik, Gerrit Van Tilburg, Wietse Veenstra and Harry Vos. In this match, FAM Selection lost to PSV Eindhoven with the scores of 2-5. Five goals from PSV Eindhoven were scored by Johan De Vrindt (2 goals), Eef Mulders (2 goals) and Wim Van Den Dungen (1 goal). However, from FAM Selection, 2 goals were scored by Zulkifli Norbit and Shaharuddin Abdullah. 

     Two PSV Eindhoven players who played in this tournament known as Harry Vos and Pleun Strik were later on played in the World Cup Final 1974. Then, Guus Hiddink who was also played in this tournament was later on became a Chelsea Club coach nowadays. FAM Selection has fought till the end a great team known as PSV Eindhoven and only got minimal lost of scored which proved that this FAM Selection was a great team and they lost with pride.

Asian Cup Central Regional Football Tournament 1971

     Asian Cup Central Regional Football Tournament 1971 was held in Bangkok, Thailand. It was part of AFC Asian Cup 1972 qualifier round. Supposedly it was participated by seven countries such as Malaysia, Indonesia, Cambodia (Khmer), Vietnam (South Vietnam), Hong Kong, Thailand and Brunei. However, Vietnam withdrew from this tournament. Malaysian team under the leadership of Dato Haji Harun Bin Haji Idris and coached by Jalil Che Din was consist of Wong Kam Fook, Osman Abdullah, Chow Kwai Lam, Lim Kim Lian, Soh Chin Aun, M. Chandran, V. Krishnasamy, Au Yoon, Ali Bakar, Rahim Abdullah, Mahadi Yusof, Shaharuddin Abdullah, Yap Eng Kok, Wong Choon Wah, Zulkifli Norbit, Mohd Noor Bin Yusof, Ibrahim Mydin, Hanafiah Mohsein, Awang Isa, Ng Kon and Mohd Baker. The opening ceremony started on 21st May 1971. In order to determine the grouping for each countries, three matches was held on 21st and 22nd May 1971. On 21st May 1971, one match was held and the result was Cambodia draw with Thailand 1-1. Then, on 22nd May 1971, two matches were held and the results were Malaysia won against Brunei 8-0. Goals from Malaysia scored by Zulkifli Norbit (3 goals), Shaharuddin Abdullah (3 goals), Wong Choon Wah (1 goal) and Soh Chin Aun (1 goal). Second match won by Indonesia against Hong Kong 2-1.

     After these results of early matches, Indonesia, Thailand and Brunei were in Group A and Malaysia, Cambodia and Hong Kong were in Group B. In Group B, Malaysia won two matches consecutively. The first match against Cambodia, Malaysia won with 2-1 scores and scored by Shaharuddin Abdullah and Wong Choon Wah. The second match against Hong Kong, Malaysia won with 2-1 scores that was scored by Shaharuddin Abdullah (2 goals) and Malaysia qualified to the semi final round.

     In the semi final round, Malaysia lost to Thailand 0-1 and met Indonesia for the third place determination. Malaysia won against Indonesia 3-0 and won the third place. Thailand became the champion of this tournament after they won against Cambodia 4-2 in the final match.

The Closed Down Of The Great Tailor For Malaysian Contingent

     Not all of us know that this tailor was a great tailor that made suit for Malaysian contingent since the Southeast Asian Peninsular (SEAP) Games in the 1960's until the Southeast Asia (SEA) Games in the 2000's. He was a humble and kind tailor, but his works were the great masterpiece and pride of Malaysian Contingent. Mr Yee Hai Yuen was his name and he was the owner of Chew Tailor that was operated since 1960's in Jalan Dang Wangi (previously known as Campbell Road). His tailor works was neat and long lasting. Unfortunately his legacy did not last long when he has to close down his tailor shop in 2014 and say goodbye to his tailor works. It was so sad that his legacy has to come to an end because of his age and health and also the drastic increase of shop rental fee of his shop. However, his legacy of tailor works still remained in our minds as among the greatest masterpiece of tailor works for Malaysian contingent. May God bless you Mr Yee Hai Yuen and I hope I have a chance to meet you and storied more about your tailor works legacy.

Type of football boots worn by certain Malaysian football legends

     Many of us did not know what kind of boots worn by these Malaysian football legends. Thefore today we want to share some of the knowledge that we have discovered:-

     Unfortunately "Broadway" boots brand photo cannot be found. But it was dicovered that these Broadway boots were used by the legendary Abdul Ghani Minhat and Zulkifli Norbit in the 1960's. These Broadway boots was locally made in Singapore, all leathered boots and the studs were covered with leather.

    Puma King boots, the most well known boots from Puma has been worn by world legends such as Eusebio, Pele and Johan Cruyff. These boots were also very well known among Malaysian football legends and being worn by them such as Shaharudin Abdullah, Zulkifli Norbit and Mokhtar Dahari.

    These two Adidas boots were among the greatest and legendary boots that can beat the famous Puma King boots popularity.They were worn by Malaysian football legends too such as Mokhtar Dahari and Zulkifli Norbit. However, for Malaysian football legend namely Wong Kam Fook, he worn Adidas World Cup boots that have steel studs. In his opinion as a goalkeeper, the steel studs from Adidas World Cup boots have the best grips and suitable for goalkeeper.

    When Malaysia football team qualified for the Olympic Munich 1972, there was an interesting story about Adidas boots. During that time Adidas boots popularity were lesser than Puma King boots. All these because of the Adidas three stripes stitched on the side of the boots have created uncomfortable grip to the players foot when they worn the boots. Many Malaysian football players at that time cut off the stripes in order to loose the grip and make sure the boots more comfortable. The same thing happened to Shaharuddin Abdullah, a Malaysian football legend when he was on training in Munich for Olympic Games. One of the Adidas top management came to watch Malaysian team training and found out Shaharuddin was wearing Adidas boots with no three stripes that was cut off by him. He was asked by that Adidas top managemnet why he did so. Shaharuddin said that he cut off the three stripes because he wants to loose the grip and have more accuracy in kicking the ball. Then, the Adidas top management invited all Malaysian football players to come to Adidas warehouse in Munich for tomorrow and picked any pair of football boots that they want for free. When the day come, each Malaysian football players picked one pair of Adidas boots for their usage.

Sultan Sulaiman Club 1978 Home Schwarzenbeck Jersey

     In 1978, Sultan Sulaiman Club worn Schwarzenbeck jersey. Later on in early 1980's Schwarzenbeck changed its name and logo into Schwarzenbach. It was the West Germany brand and this brand still exist until today. Below was the Sultan Sulaiman Club 1978 home Schwarzenbeck jersey worn by Azlan Johar in his first football career in Sultan Sulaiman Club that started on 1978. Through this club, he started shining his talents and became a football star for Malaysia, Selangor, Sultan Sulaiman Club and Talasco Diadora football team before he retired on 1990. Until today he was a well known Malaysian football player. This jersey was used in the FAM Cup 1978 match.

Malaysia Contingent SEAP/SEA Games Coat

     At the early existance, it was known as Southeast Asian Peninsular (SEAP) Games and consists of Malaya/Malaysia, Thailand, Singapore, Myanmar, Cambodia, Laos and Vietnam. The 1st SEAP Games was held in Bangkok in 1959. Then, in 1977 it has changed its name into the Southeast Asian (SEA) Games during the 9th SEA Games in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. Other countries from the Southeast Asian region that joined this SEAP/SEA Games were Brunei (1977), Indonesia (1977), Philippines (1977) and Timor Leste (2003). This sport event was held enhanced the Southeast Asian region sport development and unite the Southeast Asian countries under one sport event. Malaysia In Ho Ho Cup 1970

     Ho Ho Cup was presented in 1924 by the Ho Ho Biscuit Factory in Singapore and played between Malayan/Malaysian and Hong Kong Chinese. The original cup was lost during World War II. The Malaya (later Malaysia) team could include Singaporean players until 1969. Starting from 1970 onwards, all teams involved were permitted to insert several non-Chinese players. Up until the early 1970s, the Hong Kong team was the "Combined Chinese" team, whereby any Chinese player based in Hong Kong was eligible to play for the team, regardless of his affiliation to either the Hong Kong FA or the Taiwan FA.

     Ho Ho Cup 1970 was held in Hong Kong. The match was between Malaysian Chinese Football Association against Combined Hong Kong Chinese. It was the first time in this Ho Ho Cup that three Malay players were inserted in the Malaysian Chinese Football Associatiom team, they were Zulkifli Norbit, Mazlan Hamid and Nik Salleh Nik Man. Other Chinese players in the Malaysian Chinese team were Wong Kam Fook, Soh Chin Aun, Wong Choon Wah, Foo Fook Chuan, Chow Chee Keong, Eng Kong, Teow Seeng Ho, Chow Yoon Cheong and others. The result of this match was Combined Chinese Hong Kong won against Malaysian Chinese Football Association with the scores of 2-0.
