At the early existance, it was known as Southeast Asian Peninsular (SEAP) Games and consists of Malaya/Malaysia, Thailand, Singapore, Myanmar, Cambodia, Laos and Vietnam. The 1st SEAP Games was held in Bangkok in 1959. Then, in 1977 it has changed its name into the Southeast Asian (SEA) Games during the 9th SEA Games in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. Other countries from the Southeast Asian region that joined this SEAP/SEA Games were Brunei (1977), Indonesia (1977), Philippines (1977) and Timor Leste (2003). This sport event was held enhanced the Southeast Asian region sport development and unite the Southeast Asian countries under one sport event.
